About the USMC PFT

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is one of two annual Marine Corps fitness assessments, alongside the Combat Fitness Test (CFT). It has three events: a choice of pull-ups or push-ups, the plank, and a 3-mile run. The minimum combined score to pass is 150 points, but meeting the minimum in each individual event is required separately — falling short in any single event fails the whole test even if your total would otherwise be high enough.

Pull-ups vs. Push-ups

Pull-ups can earn a maximum of 100 points, while push-ups cap at 70 points even at maximum reps. This means a Marine who chooses push-ups cannot reach a perfect 300 combined score, but a strong push-up performance can still easily beat a weak pull-up attempt — choose whichever event you can perform best.

Data Source

This calculator uses the official USMC PFT scoring tables from MCO 6100.13A (Table 2-2 Hybrid Pull-up/Push-up Test, Table 2-4 Plank, Table 2-5 3-Mile Run, as amended through Change 4, 23 Mar 2022). The Marine Corps updates fitness standards periodically — always confirm your official score through MCTIMS/Marine-On-Line, and check for the current MCO before relying on this for a record test, promotion, or fitness report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What events are on the USMC PFT?

Three events: a choice of pull-ups (max 100 points) or push-ups (max 70 points), the plank (max 100 points), and a 3-mile run (max 100 points).

What's a passing PFT score?

150 combined points or more, with the minimum standard met in every individual event. Missing the minimum in any single event fails the entire test regardless of your total.

Is the PFT the same as the CFT?

No, they're two separate tests. The PFT measures general strength, core, and aerobic fitness (pull-ups/push-ups, plank, 3-mile run). The CFT measures combat-specific movement — see our CFT calculator (Movement to Contact, Ammunition Can Lifts, Maneuver Under Fire). Marines are required to pass both annually.

Does the PFT include a rucking event?

No. Marine Corps ruck march requirements are tested separately — see our Marine Corps ruck standards guide for hike and forced-march requirements by training stage.
