About The Ruck Calculator

What this site is

The Ruck Calculator is a free set of tools and guides for rucking — walking with a weighted pack for fitness or military/first-responder training. The core calculator estimates calories burned, recommends a starting ruck weight, and helps plan pace and distance, built on the Pandolf load-carriage equation (Pandolf, Givoni & Goldman, 1977) — a model originally developed for U.S. Army load planning and still used in military and occupational research today.

Alongside the calculators, the site publishes guides to military and first-responder ruck march standards (Army, Ranger, Air Assault, Special Forces, Marine Corps and more), beginner training plans, and gear comparisons.

How we work

  • Standards and doctrine: Military ruck standards are sourced from and cross-checked against official publications where available — for example ATP 3-21.18, Foot Marches — and cited in the "Sources & Methodology" section of each guide.
  • Calculations: The calorie calculator uses the published Pandolf load-carriage model; an optional secondary estimate uses the Keytel et al. (2005) heart-rate formula. Both are cited with their original research on the calculator page.
  • Gear recommendations: Our gear picks are based on publicly available specs, pricing, and owner reviews, not on first-hand product testing unless a page says otherwise. We link out to Amazon's search results for each recommended product rather than a single fixed listing, so prices and availability always reflect what Amazon is showing at the time you click.
  • Corrections: If you spot an error — a wrong standard, an outdated figure, a broken link — tell us via the contact page and we'll fix it.

How the site is funded

The Ruck Calculator is free to use, with no account or signup required. The site is supported through the Amazon Associates program: when you click a product link and make a qualifying purchase on Amazon, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This never affects which standards or formulas we publish — the calculators and training content are the same regardless of any affiliate relationship.

Not medical or military advice

Calculator results and training guides on this site are estimates for general fitness and informational purposes. They are not a substitute for professional medical advice, and they are not official guidance from any branch of the military. Confirm current standards with your chain of command or event organizer before relying on them for testing or qualification, and consult a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise program.
